Sleep Apnoea
Sleep Apnoea
Sleep apnoea is a sleep disorder where your breathing is interrupted in your sleep. This can occur in the form of snoring, gasping for air, slow shallow breathing or not breathing in your sleep. While sleep apnoea may cause you to stop breathing hundreds of time throughout the time, you will not remember it. Immediate effects include sleepiness during the day, memory loss, moodiness, difficulty concentrating on simple tasks, tiredness and fatigue. Sleep apnoea can also result in high blood pressure, heart attacks, diabetes, strokes, depression and glaucoma.
How is Sleep Apnoea Treated?
If we suspect that you may have sleep apnoea, a sleep study is ordered to confirm this diagnosis. Your dentist may make an oral appliance for you to wear at night during your sleep, such as a mandibular advancement splint. This aims to open up your airways by pushing your jaw forwards and preventing your tongue from blocking your airways. In more severe cases, lifestyle modifications that look at diet, exercise and smoking cession and airways pressure devices (CPAP) are considered.
