Some people may have gum lines that are uneven or fall too far below the lip line, which is commonly known by many Dentists as the ‘gummy’ smile. This can make the teeth look too small and cause people to feel self-conscious about their smiles.
Gum lifting, also known as ‘gingivectomy’, is a cosmetic dentistry treatment performed by Dr Chad, which improves the aesthetics of your smile by ensuring the gum line of your teeth is in the best possible position to show off your teeth, not distract from it. A gummy smile can now be corrected with cosmetic dentistry procedures such as laser gum contouring.
Laser Gum Contouring
At The Dental & Facial Clinic, we use the advanced technology of laser gum contouring to help correct the gummy smile in one brief visit. The process involves using a laser to perfectly accent their smiles in a fast, simple, and virtually painless procedure. To begin the laser gum contouring process, the patient’s mouth is numbed with a local anaesthetic to eliminate any discomfort. Dr Chad will then use a laser diode or electro surge to gently remove any excess gum tissue and sculpt a more uniform, symmetrical gum line. The laser and electro surge seals while they cut, which means less bleeding and a dramatically reduced chance of infection for patients as well as faster healing time.
After the procedure, patients may experience sore or swollen gums for up to a week and it may take a few weeks for your gums to heal completely. There is minimal discomfort and it should not interfere with your day to day activates such as speaking, eating or drinking, however we do recommend soft food, avoiding spicy food and foods that have seeds for a few days post surgery. We may also recommend some pain relief medication to help manage any discomfort felt.
Benefits and Risks
A gum lift can make a huge difference in the appearance of an individual, giving the patient a truly beautiful and winning smile – which is what our goal is at The Dental & Facial Clinic. It can smooth out uneven gums, extend the appearance of teeth and reshape your smile to produce a more symmetrical gum line. Patients feel more confident, happy and satisfied with their new smile.
The risk of complications during and after the laser gum contouring procedure is minimal and with a qualified cosmetic dentist such as Dr Chad with years of experience, the risk factor is low. In a very small percentage of patients however, excessive bleeding and swelling of the gums can occur and an allergic reaction to the anaesthesia are possible risks of the treatment.
